Jesus won’t answer the question from the religious leaders. We don’t owe people everything they demand of us. Walk in love, yes. But walk in Wisdom.
This whole chapter, Luke 20, is about the religious leaders. Jesus speaks against them as they are trying to trick and trap Him.
Jesus tells a parable about the Jews’ relationship to God’s prophets. They reject them. They beat them. They kill them. God sends His own Son, and they plot to kill Him.
The leaders understand Jesus is talking about them. They protest when in the story the vineyard owner destroys the tenants who killed His servants and son and gets others.
What do you think God couldn’t do, or what would be wrong for Him to do? Do you put limits on God because of your understanding or wants? The religious leaders didn’t think God could give His “vineyard” to others besides them.
It doesn’t turn them around. It just increases the threat they feel from Jesus being around.
These are Sadducees challenging Jesus and trying to entrap Him. They don’t believe in the resurrection. That’s why they tell this story about a woman married seven times. They are trying to show how the resurrection makes no sense because — whose wife would she be? They are trying to use man’s logic to disprove God.
Jesus just points out their ignorance about the resurrection and gets them with His own tricky question.
Jesus warns against the scribes in particular. I don’t know why they are singled out from the priests. He points out their hearts. He is saying they love to draw attention to themselves because they love the attention and respect of the people.
We can all enjoy attention and respect. How can we guard our hearts against doing things to gain attention and respect?
We die to self and live to love. We serve whether or not anyone sees or says thank you. We love those who offer nothing in return. We live for an audience of One.
