Be imitators of God. We’re not called to be godlike, but Christlike. We walk in love as Christ loved us. How did He love us? He gave Himself up for us. We lay our lives down as a sacrifice, a living sacrifice. We live each day for Christ and not for ourselves.
Guard what you watch and what you listen to, because those sinful things that you can find out there in the world aren’t even supposed to be mentioned among believers, who are called saints. You aren’t a sinner; you are a saint. Unless, of course, you haven’t been made new in Christ Jesus. Saints go to heaven, not sinners. Don’t let anyone deceive you on that. Paul makes that point in Ephesians 5:6. Know you are a new creation and live in it!
We’re to walk in the light. When we are in the Light, we are always confessing any wrong and being cleansed of all unrighteousness. Don’t hide from the light. Take your sin and selfishness and worldly habits into the Light and let Him deal with them and remove them from you. He’s your freedom from it. You don’t have the power to set yourself free, but He is more than able to set you free.
When you realize you are free, you should have a song in your heart and should overflow with thanksgiving.
We realize that apart from Christ we are sinners and are free only because of what Jesus did for us, and so we don’t think highly of ourselves, but submit to one other because we respect Jesus and all He’s done for us and recognize He’s done it for everyone else too.
Specifically, we’re told that wives are to submit to their own husbands. This does not say women are servants to men. This is just about unity in the home.
Husbands and wives are to be an honoring picture of Christ and the church. The husband is to lay down his life for his wife, nourishing and cherishing her, and she’s to submit to him, willing to trust God that she has blessing in submitting to her husband where he asks her to, apart from denying Christ and rebelling against God.
There is amazing beauty in loving each other like this. Trust the Lord’s design for marriage.
