Versions of Truth

In the gospel of John, in John’s version of the story of the resurrection, it was only Mary Magdalene and she was there before light and there were two angels. In Mark’s version, there were three women, the sun was up, and there was one angel.

Can the Bible be wrong?

The truth here is that this is what the person recollecting to the author recollected. This was their understanding of the event. The gospel of Mark, we believe, is Peter’s recollection of events. He wasn’t there. He talked with one of the women, so we’re hearing a story passed on from someone who heard the story from someone who heard the story.

One of the proofs of the Bible being true are differences like this. There was no conspiracy to come up with a story about the resurrection. The stories would have been the same or much more similar. The differences in the stories are what convinced one atheist detective that the Bible was true. He knew this is what eye witness stories sounded like. They aren’t the same.

We get an extra tidbit here. In Mark’s version, the women are told to go and tell his disciples and Peter.

This was after Peter denied Jesus. Having his name singled out that Jesus wanted him to know would have been important to Peter, I would think.

The women fled the scene at the news. They were afraid. They were trembling. They didn’t know what to do with what they had just seen, so they say nothing. But they do obey and deliver the message.

As for the end of the chapter, I will say that the signs following believers are signs the devil tries to copy. He’s a counterfeit and a liar. That doesn’t mean, however, that there isn’t a truthful version. Our God does perform signs and wonders!
