Urgency

“They were urgent.” That is a description of those accusing Jesus. Jesus was never in a hurry. God is never in a hurry. Satan is the one saying, “Hurry up.”

When Christians talk about urgency, it’s usually about evangelism. There will be a day when it will be too late for people to turn to Christ. Jesus tells us to work while it is day because the night is coming.

But that doesn’t mean we push and shove to get things done. It doesn’t mean we busy ourselves. It means we recognize the eternal value in each day.

Anyone pushing you to do something is not sent from God. Jesus didn’t urge people to follow Him. He gave the invitation and walked away.

Satan sounds like the crowd. “They were urgent, demanding with loud cries.” The loud, demanding voice is Satan’s. Don’t we see the urgency in scams? They are always saying we have to take care of whatever it is NOW.

In Luke 23, we read that their voices prevailed. How do we keep the wrong voice from prevailing? We have to know the truth. We are still and know who our God is. The truth sets free. You think, “I don’t have to do that. The old has passed away. I am a new creation. Christ in me wouldn’t do that.”

Jesus is delivered over to the will of the people. Getting what you want isn’t a good thing unless it’s what God wants. Instead of demanding from God, surrender your life to God.

Jesus keeps His focus and is thinking of others and not Himself. He tells the women not to weep for Him and forgives those killing Him. He’s thinking of others and not Himself when He is mocked about how He can’t save Himself. He could have proved them wrong, but He wasn’t out to defend Himself.

What happened to Jesus when He died? I am not going to say that I know, but He tells the one criminal that they will be in paradise together that day. Jesus may not have risen in body until the third day, but just like us, His Spirit never died. He was reunited with His Father.

The people left at the cross, though, go home beating their breasts, thinking an innocent man was killed, and maybe even the Son of God!

Jesus is buried and the women prepare spices. Then they all must rest. It’s the Sabbath. They had to just rest and wait on God.
