Types of Sentences

Simple Sentences

simple sentence is made up of a subject and one verb, and together they are a complete thought.

Obed is eating dinner with his family.


Compound Sentences

compound sentence is made up of two complete sentences, but they are connected to one another with a conjunction. Some of these conjunctions are:

  • and
  • but
  • or


It was late, but they were leisurely eating dinner.

Complex Sentences

complex sentence is made up of a sentence and another subject and verb that’s not a complete thought.

These sentences use a different type of conjunction. It uses words such as:

  • because
  • if
  • when
  • while
  • until

Here are examples of complex sentences.

Mark decided to wait because he was already there.

While Alise was waitingshe decided to look around.
