Types of Nouns

A noun names a person, place, or thing.

Common Nouns

person: officer, plumber, mom, grandfather, cousin
place: city, home, beach, theater, library
thing: computer, desk, pencil, cup, or even love, joy, and peace

Proper Nouns

Proper nouns are the names of people, places, and things. Names begin with a capital letter, so proper nouns always start with a capital letter.

person: Mrs. Erickson, Richard, Dr. Truwin
place: Wyoming, Wrigley Field, Spain, Roosevelt Elementary School
thing: Oreos, Kleenex

Collective Nouns

A collective noun names a group or people or things such as traffic, family, staff, fleet (of ships), bouquet (of flowers).
