To Whom I Look

Do you want God’s attention? Do you want Him paying attention to you? What is God looking for?

Isaiah 66 verse 2 says that “this is the one to whom I will look: he who is humble and contrite in spirit and trembles at my word.”

A humble spirit is one that is bowed in worship towards God. It’s one who recognizes God is God and that he is not. It’s one who relies on God instead of self.

God is near to the humble. We need humility. We need a savior. We need to know we are not that savior and not try to rely on ourselves.

God looks to the one who is contrite in spirit. A contrite spirit is one that recognizes their guilt. It’s a person remorseful over their sin and repentant, wanting to turn from their sin. A contrite spirit knows there is no righteousness or holiness outside of Christ. They know that there is no goodness in them apart from God.

God looks to the one who trembles at His word. Have you ever trembled at God’s word? What does that mean?

In the old-time revivals, people would hear about a God who comes in judgement against sinners and they would tremble in fear. There are stories of people passing out in fear.

Have we lost the fear of God in the church? Fear of the Lord is foundational. It’s the beginning of wisdom, knowledge, and understanding. We’re told God’s people die for lack of knowledge. It’s because they lack the fear of God. Satan has been chipping away at it. We can see it in the lack of respect for parents and husbands. That was lost as the fear of God was lost.

I’m not even sure I can say I tremble at His word, except that I believe I must obey it. I know I don’t get to just go after my flesh and ask forgiveness.

Do all you can to choose the fear of the Lord. It’s your life at stake.
