We go to the Lord so that He can teach us His ways. We learn His ways so that we can walk in His paths.
His paths are the paths of righteousness and they lead to eternal dwellings. We want to dwell in the house of the Lord forever.
We need to go to the Lord to teach us. We need to put away our books, and I say this as a Bible teacher who writes books. Make sure you are reading the Bible! Devotionals are not a substitute for the word of God. Lessons that don’t point you to go to God and to go to His Word but instead tell you what to do can do much more harm than good.
We have piles of how-to books when it comes to Christian living and Christian ministry. We think we know so much. It’s pride. Humility is relying on God, being totally un-reliant on self and totally God-reliant. When we’re following a how-to, that’s just a version of a self-help book. You are doing it yourself, no God required.
One of the accusations against Israel was that their land was filled with silver and gold and weapons and idols, and that people bowed down to the work of their hands. When we’re relying on the how-to, we are bowing to the work of our hands. We’ve made an idol. We are following this person who wrote the book instead of the God of the universe who is the only one who knows all things!
As Isaiah 2 says, “Stop regarding man in whose nostrils is breath, for of what account is he?”
We need to find humility. God has plans for the proud, and they aren’t ones you’d enjoy. Humble yourself before God does it for you because all that is lifted up shall be brought low.
Jesus is coming. We can escape with Him because We know Him as our Savior, or we can be terrified because we relied on other gods who can’t possibly save.
