Jesus says that we will do greater works than Him because He goes to the Father. Why did He have to go to the Father in order for us to be able to do His works?
He had to go to the Father in order for the Holy Spirit to be poured out.
We can never do the works of Christ, not the supernatural ones. We can show some compassion and care. But we can’t calm storms or raise the dead or heal or prophesy without the Holy Spirit. We can do nothing on our own. Only God does the works of God. You will never heal. Don’t read a book how to do it. You can’t. God heals. Just give yourself to Him to use.
We are told we can ask anything in His name as well. God wants to answer prayer to bring Himself glory. When He is lifted up, more people look to Him. When people look to Him, people are saved! We want to exalt Jesus and the Father.
To ask in His name isn’t to say the magic word. It’s asking in His authority and nature. If we are living as Christ, we are pleasing to the Father, keeping His commandments, in His will, and He will answer our pleasing prayers. That’s the power of Jesus’ name.
We can live as Christ because the Spirit is with us forever. He is the Spirit of Truth. He will teach us Truth, lead us in Truth. We can trust God in us.
By the Spirit in us, we will walk in obedience to God’s commands. That’s His love for us and our love for Him.
Jesus says He will reveal Himself to the one who loves God, keeping the commandments. Not only that, but Jesus and the Father will make their home with the one who keeps God’s words. God dwells in us. Let that sink in.
What are the implications of living life truly with God? One is that the devil has no claim on you because he has no claim on Christ.
The chapter ends with the admonition to not let your heart be troubled. God gives peace. It’s not the world’s peace. It’s a steadfast, lasting peace.
