There is a blessing and a curse in Isaiah 3, and it’s the same exact thing. You will receive what you give. You’ll eat the fruit of your deeds.
In particular, chapter 3 speaks about the sin of pride in beauty. This specifically speaks of women, but you can apply it to men as well.
Women in particular are susceptible to going after beauty because men are created a way that they respond to visual stimuli. They respond to what they see. Women want to look a certain way to get men’s attention so that they feel beautiful, feel desirable. It can even be a feeling of power women get when they can get a man’s attention.
The New Testament gives women some direction for beauty and appearance.
1 Peter 3 verses 3 and 4 say, “Do not let your adorning be external—the braiding of hair and the putting on of gold jewelry, or the clothing you wear—but let your adorning be the hidden person of the heart with the imperishable beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which in God’s sight is very precious.”
A gentle and quiet spirit is very precious in God’s sight. God’s approval should be what we’re after. Jesus should be the man whose eye you want to catch. Remember Song of Solomon 4:9? “You have captivated my heart, my sister, my bride; you have captivated my heart with one glance of your eyes, with one jewel of your necklace.” Your looks, which include the heart, should capture the Lord’s heart.
Check your heart motivation for why you dress or act or take pictures in a certain way.
And ask God to give you a beautiful heart, one that captures His.
