Strength to Subdue

No one had the strength to subdue the man possessed by demons. Man’s strength isn’t strong enough for God’s work. God’s work is easy. You can’t do it by strength. “Not by might, nor by power, but by the Spirit.”

When you find yourself striving and laboring at something, working with great effort, stop and recognize that you are likely working in your own strength. Bow your head under His yoke. His yoke is easy. Join yourself together with Jesus in the work. It’s not by our might, but by His Spirit. We should never work alone.

Could humans have the power to make the herd of pigs rush into the sea? Sure. We’re good at multiplying the curse, making things worse.

The man delivered from demons is directed by Jesus not to follow Him but to go tell his friends what the Lord had done for him and how He had shown him mercy. That’s sharing your testimony. That’s a power we all have.

Our persuasive words aren’t what is going to bring someone to Christ. It might convince them of something. Often we try to use selfish reasoning, trying to get them to think how Jesus could make their lives better (peace, love, joy, help for their problems). We want them to make a decision for Christ. That’s not conversion though. If we can do the work, it’s not the eternal, lasting work that needs doing. God alone does the work of salvation. Only God can change a heart. Share how He changed yours.

No physician, no human, could subdue the woman’s disease. Jesus had the power. He didn’t have to do the work. He was just standing there. He did nothing of Himself. The Father did the work. The Spirit acted.

One work that Jesus did do was have compassion. He loved the people. That was His job. That’s our job. He had compassion on the ruler whose daughter had died. Jesus loved. We love. He reaches out His hand. We reach out ours. We tell them what good thing God has done for them.
