Jesus sends out the seventy-two ahead of Him. They were preparing the way. Jesus said He was sent to preach. He healed out of compassion. That wasn’t His mission. It made it harder to do His mission. He sent others to do the healing. It would take away some of the demand, and I would think, it would create some extra interest in what God was doing when the preacher came to town.
We’re to pray, and not just pray, but pray earnestly, for the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into His harvest. It’s the Lord’s harvest. He sends out His workers into His fields to bring in His harvest. He’s prepared His harvest. Where are the laborers?
I find the directions to find the house of peace and remain there interesting. Jesus is sending them out ahead of Him, but He’s gone before them and prepared a place for them to remain while they are there.
Just as the household was blessed when the ark of the Lord remained with it, while we are with someone, the Lord’s presence will be a blessing to them. Staying with someone will bring a blessing. They are to eat what’s set before them. Don’t ask questions. Just say thanks.
They are to announce the nearness of God’s kingdom. Their coming and offering healing brought the kingdom near. We bring the Kingdom with us when we bring Jesus to people.
The seventy-two rejoice in being able to operate in Jesus’ authority, but Jesus says that’s not for them to rejoice in. It’s not their power and authority. They did nothing. They were to rejoice that they were children of God.
They could rejoice because God had revealed Himself to them. They were seeing things the prophets only spoke about and never saw. It was God’s gracious will to reveal Himself to little children, and not the wise and understanding.
Never think you are something special for all you know and understand. God chooses the weak things of this world!
