There is reward for our work in the land of the living. Jesus assures the disciples who had given up families and land and homes that they will receive back a hundred times as much.
There will be reward in heaven. Jesus speaks of it when He talks about the reward for those who are persecuted.
But God doesn’t wait until we are dead to bring about promises. He sees us here and now, and He takes care of us here and now.
The Ethiopian who takes matters into his own hands and approaches the king on Jeremiah’s behalf is rewarded.
He didn’t fear the king and stood up for what was the right way to treat a person.
God rewards him. He is given his life. The Ethiopian is scared of the Chaldeans, but God’s mercy will trump fear and he will be delivered.
God says of him that he will get his life as a prize because he put his trust in the Lord. Making the choice to do the right thing is an act of trusting God, and there is reward in that.
Jeremiah is also rewarded, though we don’t hear God speak of it as He did for the Ethiopian.
Jeremiah is rewarded by his relationship with God. He, like all believers who truly know their Father, live in a constant place of provision and protection, God looking after them and caring for them.
Jeremiah is thrown into the well, but he is saved out. Somehow Nebuchadnezzar knows about Jeremiah and while he’s having others slaughtered, he gives the command to look after Jeremiah and to not harm him but to do as Jeremiah tells him to do.
There is reward in surrendering your life to the Lord.
