Our scripture is Proverbs 1:33, “but whoever listens to me will dwell secure and will be at ease, without dread of disaster” (ESV).
This is a different “at ease” than we might think of. This is what we need: at rest and at peace because we’re trusting God, not because we’re satisfying the flesh. We think if we just had money in the bank, we could be at ease—rest easy. There are “Christian” courses you can take to learn how to store up money, so you can be at ease. It’s a false peace that can quickly go away. One turn of the economy, and you can be right back to worrying. We think that if we just had the healing we’re after, if the pain would go away, if that problem would just go away, then we could be at ease. It would be a false peace. Another pain, another problem, is always just around the bend.
We don’t know the future. If a war broke out in our country, where would your “ease” be then? If major natural disasters came through your neighborhood, where would your “ease” be then? We can’t find our ease in a problem-free life. It doesn’t exist. It’s not supposed to exist.
If we had no problems, we’d have no need of God. We need to need Him. We need Him to be our Savior. We need to learn to fear and follow Him. Ease and comfort turn us looking to ourselves and our own flesh. When we’re seeking this kind of ease, we’re looking to satisfy our flesh, the desires of our bodies and minds. We’re trying to get what we think we want and need.
The truth is we just need Jesus. Seeking to live each day in Christ, in the secret place with the Most High, hidden in Christ in His tent, tucked under His wings of protection, is where we find our secure dwelling. Anything trying to get at you would have to go through Him first, if you are IN Christ. Then we can be at ease, not because life is always easy, but because we have no fear, no dread. No matter what may come our way, we know we are held secure in the loving arms of our God.
