Philippians 3:18-19  …they are the enemies of the cross of Christ: whose end is destruction, whose god is their belly, …who set their mind on earthly things.

Who are these enemies of the cross whose end is destruction? They are people ruled by their appetites who set their mind on earthly things.

Things like sports and entertainment are an earthly appetite. I remember overhearing two men talking about wrestling just minutes after the Easter service. It was so disheartening to me, especially since I had spent the second service hidden away praying for them. Our minds should have been on the resurrection for our justification. John says it just as firmly, “Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him” (1 John 2:15). I remember someone saying how they wanted to volunteer with the youth because they wanted to go out to eat. Not a good reason. It’s an earthly appetite.

Are we stirring up a hunger and thirst for the things of God, for His righteousness?

Is. 66:5  [They] have said, ‘Let the LORD be glorified…,’ but it is they who shall be put to shame.

The right words and outward appearance aren’t what matter.

Is. 66:2  But this is te one to whom I will look: he who is humble and contrite in spirit and trembles at my word.
