“By a pillar of cloud you led them in the day, and by a pillar of fire in the night to light for them the way in which they should go” (Nehemiah 9:12, ESV).

God lit the way. God shined His light to show to them the way He was choosing for them to go. Sound like anything you experience?

“Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path” (Psalm 119:105, ESV). We still have God shining His light to show us His way. We have His Word to point us in the right direction, and to travel with us on the way as we walk in His ways and stay in the light.

We may think we would like that big fiery pillar to show us when and where to go, but it wasn’t always easy. Waiting isn’t easy. They couldn’t leave until the pillar moved down. And going, when you are wanting to stay, isn’t easy either. We have it easier now. We have His Word in us and with us. Jesus is the Word and He is with us. We don’t only have a guide, but we have God’s Spirit and His Word to comfort us and to encourage us along the journey.
