brought beds, basins, and earthen vessels, wheat, barley, flour, parched grain, beans and lentils
2 Samuel 17:28 ESV
I was thinking how invaluable a gift this was. David’s men were going to have all Israel descend on them like dew. They could use some food and sleep.
The helpers are important. It makes me think of Tychicus. He shows up in some of the epistles. He was a helper. He did things to help Paul. We believe that because of him, we have Ephesians and Colossians; he delivered the letters.
In our story today, we also have the woman hiding the men who were part of the spy team for David.
The spies and soldiers were needed too, yes, but without the helpers, they don’t get very far.
Value the role you’ve been given by the Lord.
I received My Utmost for His Highest as a high-school graduation gift. Oswald would say that most of the time, the saint is unaware that the Lord is using him. He didn’t publish that bestselling book that still influences me a century later. He just taught those the Lord put before him.
In cases like delivering the supplies, you may see the opportunity and the effort to meet the need, but you don’t know what the Lord is doing behind the scenes and how He’ll use it or what centuries-long ripple effect will come from it.
