Love Them All

John is writing many of these same things from 1 John in his letter to this woman and her children.

He’s reminding her that our commandment is to love one another.

He warns again of antichrists. We know who is of God by the love of God.

We don’t have to receive false teachers who are teaching anything other than freedom from sin and freedom to love and obey through Christ.

John refrains from going on. He wants to meet face to face. Gather with the brethren if you can. John says their joy will be complete if he can come to them. Our joy in fellowship is in being together. Don’t neglect being with brethren.

We then have a letter from John to Gaius. John prays that he is well and in good health. That’s not some promise that believers are always wealthy and healthy!

John is rejoicing because he is hearing that “his children” are walking in the truth.

Our leaders are responsible for us. Pray for them and treat them well.

This Gaius has been faithfully loving strangers. Don’t just love your own. I don’t see it as very loving when people are cared for only when they are in a church or organization. We love. We love them all. We don’t just care for our own. We love the Body.

It sounds like these strangers are missionaries. They are traveling through and he cared for them. John encourages their support.

When we support missionaries, we are joining in the work. We become “fellow workers for the truth.”

John, a pillar of the church, has people who don’t accept his authority in the church. There are those who have exalted themselves. John was put in his position by Jesus.

Imitate what is good. The good loves the brethren and encourages the love of the brethren.

John again speaks of coming together. He speaks of friends. We love one another.
