Zechariah twelve starts with a prophecy about physical Israel. They are going to rise up and defeat their enemies, through the Lord’s doing. It will be supernatural.
God has always and will always intervene with Israel’s history. He has an everlasting covenant with them. He can’t break it. He is faithful.
He not only is going to physically save Israel; He’s going to spiritually save Israel.
He will pour out a spirit of grace. The grace gift will give them “pleas for mercy.”
He doesn’t just pour out mercy. He pours out the grace gift to recognize their sin and be contrite over it. They will mourn for their sin.
God draws near to those contrite in heart. It will be their salvation.
That is not a collective salvation. Each individual will mourn and God will draw near to each. He sees each one.
Zechariah 13 continues with what God will accomplish on that day, that day when Christ appears and God’s chosen people, the Jews, recognize that Jesus is their Messiah.
He will cleanse His people from their sin. All idols will be removed. The things causing sin will also be removed, false prophets and the spirit of uncleanness.
It sounds like there will be no more prophets. When God is here to speak for Himself, there will be no need!
The end of Zechariah 13 is about God’s wrath and discipline. Part of Israel will be saved as a remnant. Part will be cut off. That’s God’s wrath. I guess not everyone mourns their sin with a contrite heart.
The remnant will get a baptism by fire. They will be tested and refined. The end result, though, will be that they will call on God and He will answer. He will call them His people and they will call Jesus their Lord.
