This is a command. These are commands too:

Rejoice always.

Pray without ceasing and always giving thanks.

Think on what is true, just, pure, etc. I think only God fits the description.

We also read about taking EVERY thought captive and bringing it into obedience. What are obedient thoughts?

We have our commands. We’re to dwell on God with thanksgiving and praise. That should be the makeup of our thought life. Anything else becomes a prayer with thanksgiving.

Peter had nothing but the peace of Christ on his mind as he slept the night before his planned execution. The Lord had to do a work in Elijah to turn his thinking around off himself and back onto the tasks the Lord set before him. And God accomplishes it.
