The fear of the Lord leads to life, and whoever has it rests satisfied; he will not be visited by harm.

Proverbs 19:23 ESV

As for me, I shall behold your face in righteousness; when I awake, I shall be satisfied with your likeness.

Psalm 17:15 ESV

The repeated word I noticed in our reading today is “satisfied.” We rest satisfied when we have the fear of the Lord and are satisfied with His likeness.

This year I’ve been thinking a lot about rest, about shalom, about the end of work and striving, about living in the broad place of freedom, about fullness, about honoring the Lord’s Sabbath (which has to do with humility, not Saturdays).

The fear of the Lord affords us the ability to rest satisfied. There is no fear of harm because we are at rest. There’s no unease there. There’s no fear of bad news because our hearts are at rest, safe in God’s hands.

When we’re at rest with God, then when we see His face, His righteousness, it produces a sense of fullness, joy, peace, love. When we’re at rest with God, there’s no fear when faced with the righteousness of God, only satisfaction.
