John 8:31-32

“Jesus therefore said to those Jews who had believed him, ‘If you remain in my word, then you are truly my disciples. You will know the truth, and the truth will make you free’” (John 8:31-32, WEB).

Let’s walk through the logic of those verses backwards. “If you remain in my word, then you are truly my disciples. You will know the truth, and the truth will make you free.” In order to be free, we need the truth. We’ll know the truth if we are truly his disciples. We’ll truly be His disciples if we remain in His Word. We need to keep His commandments, guard them, keep our eye on them. We need to keep Him and His Word before us.

How about this verse? “And I will walk in freedom, for I have sought Your precepts” (Psalm 119:45, BSB). Precepts are commandments that were general rules for living: behavior, how we should act. Like, love God and love your neighbor as yourself, as opposed to a specific thing you had to do. We have freedom. We walk in freedom, when what our feet are going after are God’s ways.
