Jealous and Avenging

We see a picture of the one, true God in Nahum 1. There aren’t two Gods, a loving one and a wrathful one.

“The Lord is slow to anger and great in power, the Lord is good, a stronghold in the day of trouble; he knows those who take refuge in him. But with an overflowing flood he will make a complete end of the adversaries.”

He is good and slow to anger, BUT.

There is one God, and there is a reason God is both wrathful and slow to anger. He’s not a contradiction.

God is a jealous God. He loves His people and cares about them with a devoted love. When His people are being harmed, He will come against their enemies and hold them accountable for what they have done.

God to us is a loving, compassionate Father who overlooks our sin because He’s gotten rid of it by delivering justice through the death of His Son, the Righteous One.

God to His enemies is still a God of love. Jesus taught us to love our enemies. God causes the sun and rain to come down on His enemies. Jesus washed Judas’ feet.

God doesn’t create people just so He can destroy them. He created people to love them. He loves them all. For God so loved the world…

And He loves the whole world, so when some are hurting others, He will act in justice. People don’t get to decide who rules. God rules.

“Thus says the Lord, ‘Though they are at full strength and many, they will be cut down and pass away.’”

It doesn’t matter how strong an army is. It doesn’t matter how strong your enemy is. God rules. They will be cut down. They will go away. God sets His people free.

Whatever your struggle, seek God’s deliverance. He is mighty to save. Then carry your testimony with you wherever you go and bring the good news of a God who saves!
