Keep sound wisdom and discretion. If you lie down, you will not be afraid; when you lie down, your sleep will be sweet. Do not be afraid of sudden terror. The Lord will be your confidence.
Proverbs 3:21,24-26 ESV (edited)
Have you ever not had sweet sleep? Today we’re given a remedy, a recipe for how to have sweet sleep. Keep sound wisdom and discretion.
Wisdom is having knowledge and knowing how to apply it. Discretion is making a careful choice. This isn’t about having common sense or any other of the world’s ideas about wisdom. We get wisdom from God. We’re told in James to ask for it if we lack it. The Spirit of God is described as the Spirit of Wisdom. We should have wisdom if we live according to the Spirit. A careful choice would consider God’s ways, God’s word, God’s honor. It wouldn’t react in a situation. It would seek God first and make a deliberate choice to obey God.
The result is that we can have confidence. We’ll know we’re in His best way giving us freedom from fear.
