What’s in your heart? Ezekiel is told that the men before him had taken their idols into their hearts. What have you received into your heart?
Maybe you don’t think you have an idol, but think of it this way. Is there anything in your heart that directs your decisions, your thoughts, your actions?
If you have unforgiveness in your heart and it can direct you to not speak to someone, that’s something controlling you. Only your God should be able to control you. You are letting that thing have godlike power in your life if it is directing your thoughts, words, or actions.
If you have lust in your heart and it causes you to turn to its object, then it’s your god. You can lust for food and entertainment. It doesn’t have to be a person, though it can be of course. No desire should be able to beckon and you answer. If it has that power over you, it’s acting as a god in your life. You should be submitted to the Lord God alone.
If you have fear in your heart and it is able to direct your decisions, then you are giving it godlike power.
Maybe you have believed a lie about yourself, that you can’t…fill in the blank. Don’t let thoughts not from God direct your steps. God alone gets to say who you are. In Christ you can do all things. That’s the truth. Believing something else is rejecting God’s word and giving something else power over your life.
The Lord rails against the lies, those telling them and those seeking them and listening, but in doing so He shows His heart.
They will bear their punishment of having believed a lie; but it is so that they will no longer go astray, but rather be His people and that He might be their God.
