Into the Storm

Jesus says, “Let’s cross the lake.” Does He know the storm is coming? I am going to lean toward saying no. He didn’t need to know. He knew His Father. He didn’t have to know anything else.

Jesus goes to sleep. He was tired. He was human. Was this a supernatural sleep that allowed Him to sleep through the chaos of the storm, or was He a good sleeper? We can be sure His mind was at perfect peace. He knew He laid down in safety. It was right there in Psalm 4, and He was the Word!

The disciples think they are dying. They are forgetting that it had been Jesus who directed them across the lake. They were in the storm because Jesus brought them there.

Jesus didn’t rebuke the disciples for not having the faith to calm the storm themselves. Jesus had been peacefully sleeping through the storm. He didn’t feel the need for the storm to be stopped. He was going to sail through peacefully, completely at rest. What a picture for us!

Is God in control? Is He sovereign over your circumstances? Then trust He’ll bring you to the other side of the trial. Be at rest. Be still and know He’s your God!

The disciples are in awe. The wind obeys Jesus. The demons obey too. All of creation recognizes the name of Jesus, His power, nature, and authority, except for humans.

Legion knew Jesus was the Son of the Most High God, but just because demons know some things, does not at all mean we should ever listen to them. The devil is a liar and will throw in a little truth to trick us into believing the lies. Don’t be taught by demons. It’s a foolish thing to do.

One thing to note in this story of the demonized man getting free is that Jesus doesn’t tell the man to follow Him. He sends the man home to tell what God has done. Jesus didn’t say, “Follow me,” to everyone. He wasn’t after building a following. He loved others. He sent that man out as an evangelist. He didn’t keep him for Himself.
