We sing songs about how God is for us. I know some would argue we can’t have an “Old Testament” view of God. But God is one and unchanging. Jesus shows us the Father. He’s the best picture we have of the Father. Jesus didn’t come to condemn. He forgave. But how did He speak to the Pharisees and chief priests, those not seeking and believing truth?
The ones Jesus was harsh to were the ones who thought that God was for them. That’s not what upset Jesus the most; it was how they hurt others. Their pride in their belief that God was for them was what kept God far. God is far from the proud.
In the church today, we spend a lot of time assuring ourselves of God’s being for us, not failing us, of His forgiving us, etc.
That’s not always automatically the case. We can be convinced of things that aren’t true.
If you aren’t walking in obedience, you can’t walk in forgiveness. God is faithful and just to forgive us when we confess our sins. We can’t live in our sins and live in forgiveness. We confess and turn from our sins. We repent. Then we can receive forgiveness and cleansing.
Then we can expect God to be on our side.
God will always be for you in that He desires after your salvation. He wants everyone to be saved. But you can’t just say God is your friend, that He hears and answers your prayers, etc. unless you are walking in His ways and in relationship with Him.
God can be against His people. God’s plan was to save a remnant. They needed a shaking up and a waking up. You may need the same. When it seems like God is against You, maybe He is allowing a trouble to turn you back to Him, but it’s only because truly He’s ultimately for you.
