“For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin.” (Hebrews 4:15, ESV).
Jesus was tempted in every respect. I was thinking about that and wondered if Jesus ever struggled with unbelief. Unbelief is maybe the biggest struggle of humanity. I wondered how Jesus could be tempted to unbelief, when He knew the Father and He knew He and the Father were perfectly united as One. Then I remembered the cross and the separation. Jesus had to descend “into the lower parts of the earth.”
I don’t know how long the separation lasted. But maybe, maybe it just lasted long enough for Jesus to be tempted to doubt. Maybe Jesus had to recall the promises just like we are asked to. Maybe He recited Psalm 16:10, “For You will not abandon my soul to Sheol; You will not allow Your Holy One to undergo decay” (NASB). Jesus understands the trial of temptation. But He overcame. It’s His life that is in you now, if you have been baptized into His death and risen to new life in Christ by His Spirit. We live this life by the faith of the Son of God, who loved you and gave Himself for you. Thank You, Jesus!
He gave Himself for us in every way. That wasn’t just dying for us. That was submitting to the trials and troubles of human life, so that He would be able to be there for us and help us through. He did it for us. When you are going through trials and troubles, maybe you can have the same mindset: one that is submitted to the Father’s good will. But also knowing that what you are going through, the Father can use as a blessing in someone else’s life.
