Now the appearance of the glory of the Lord was like a devouring fire on the top of the mountain in the sight of the people of Israel.

Exodus 24:17 ESV

When I read this, I thought how God first showed Moses how He was in the “devouring fire,” at the burning bush, before he called Moses to go into it.

We will be asked to walk through the fire as believers, but He shows us that He is in the fire. Jesus Himself joined the three Hebrew young men in the fiery furnace. We may be called to walk through the flames, but the flames will not burn us (Isaiah 43:2). Jesus Himself will protect us. He’s our shield, our fortress, the one who delivers us from death.

‘O Lord , you have brought up my soul from Sheol; you restored me to life from among those who go down to the pit.’

Psalm 30:3 ESV

Jesus Himself will save us. He makes it His job to protect us so the evil one cannot touch us (1 John 5:18).
