Delight in the Fear of the Lord

Here is a description of Jesus from verses 2 and 3. “And the Spirit of the Lord shall rest upon him, the Spirit of wisdom and understanding, the Spirit of counsel and might, the Spirit of knowledge and the fear of the Lord. And his delight shall be in the fear of the Lord. He shall not judge by what his eyes see, or decide disputes by what his ears hear.” And from verse 5, “Righteousness shall be the belt of his waist, and faithfulness the belt of his loins.”

There is only one Holy Spirit. There aren’t many spirits in Jesus. He is full of God and is God. The Holy Spirit is God and the fullness of God. The Spirit in Christ is the fullness of wisdom, understanding, counsel, might, knowledge, and the fear of the Lord. We have those things when we are filled with the Holy Spirit. We can have God’s counsel, strength, wisdom, knowledge and understanding.

And we can have the fear of the Lord. We know from Proverbs that the fear of the Lord is the beginning of that wisdom, knowledge, and understanding. We need to start there.

When people come to Christ because He is good and loving and will help their lives, they are missing the fear of the Lord. We need to know we are sinners who have sinned against a holy God who demands justice. The fear of the Lord is the beginning and isn’t something to hide from.

Jesus’ delight, we’re told, “shall be in the fear of the Lord.” How can you delight in the fear of the Lord? Maybe His delight is when His people respond in the fear of the Lord. That doesn’t mean cowering before God. It means obedience. It means turning to Him and relying on Him because we’re scared to turn elsewhere. Jesus was delighted to be absolutely, completely dependent on the Father.

He is trustworthy to go to. He is also defined by righteousness and faithfulness. He will not do you wrong. He will not just give up on you and walk away. He is right and good, faithful and true. You can trust Him. You can lean on Him.
