King Alfred the Great

The most famous king of the Anglo-Saxons was Alfred the Great. Having “great” in his name should give you a hint that he was important to their history. He was called King of the English, the first to take that title.

Many stories were written about Alfred that showed his smarts and humanness.

He became king in 871 AD after his brother died. He had a council of nobles and church leaders. He valued education. He encouraged his people to become educated and had books translated into English.

He built forts and warships to protect and guard his kingdom. He reigned twenty-eight years.
