Adultery with the World

This chapter has gross descriptions, not written for children. I don’t even really want to read this stuff. I don’t like reading the descriptions of their sins or the wrath against them, which certainly come up in more than just this chapter.

God uses the image of a prostitute to make His point. Marriage is a picture of our union with Christ. Paul describes that in Ephesians 5. Marriage is very special to God. It’s a symbol of our oneness with Christ, the church’s submission to Him, and His laying down His life for us.

Committing adultery either in act or through lust is an affront to God. It’s saying He doesn’t satisfy and you want someone else.

In Jeremiah 31, God says He was a husband to Israel. This is imagery He uses. We’re told we’re the bride of Christ.

We’re to be united in purity with God. You don’t invite anything else into the marriage bed. It’s for a husband and wife committed to each other for life. Nothing else belongs there.

In Ezekiel 23, God is giving a history of Israel and Judah. He’s using adultery as how He describes it. He says Israel lusted after Assyria and gave herself to Assyria, so God let her have Assyria. The Assyrians came and took Israel away captive.

The same thing is then described with Judah and Babylon, and Babylon takes Judah captive.

God will give us over to what we desire. Are you desiring after God? What is it you are after? Do you desire the world’s idea of success? Do you want to just play games and entertain yourself all the time? Are you craving food? Or worse things…

Being given over to your sin is a scary thing. Sin steals, kills, and destroys. God gives abundant life. Make your choice.
