Week 27

These are the numbers that Caleb, Latisha, Mallory, Theo, and Zoe wore when they ran in a marathon: 5500, 5328, 5216, 5330, 3417.

Each runner wore a different number. The runners got their numbers in the order that they signed in on the day of the race. So the first person to sign in got number 1 and the last person to sign in got number 5,500.

  • Of the five, Caleb had the lowest number.
  • The digit in the tens place on Theo’s shirt is one more than the digit in the tens place on Caleb’s shirt.
  • Mallory was the last person to sign in.

Week 28

Roman, Geri, Charlotte, and Ethan each bought snacks from several vending machines. Each person got back 6 coins, but they were different combinations of coins.

Each person received less than $1 in change. The machines returned only nickels, dimes, and quarters. Each person had at least one of each coin.

  • Roman had the fewest dimes but the same number of quarters as Ethan.
  • Geri had an equal number of nickels, dimes, and quarters.
  • Charlotte had the same number of quarters as Geri.

Franchella, Gabriel, Henry, and Kari bought 3 bags of fruit each. Each type of fruit had a different number of fruit in the bag. There was just 1 pineapple in the bag. There were 2 oranges in a bag. There were 3 peaches in a bag and 4 apples. There were 6 bananas in a bag.

  • Franchella bought 2 bags of apples and one bag of oranges.
  • Gabriel bought the same number of oranges as Franchella, and the rest of the fruit he bought were peaches.
  • Henry got the same kinds of fruit as Franchella but a different number of each fruit.
  • Kari chose fruit that no one else bought. She bought two kinds of fruit. She had more than 10 pieces of fruit in all.

Week 30

A family packed 9 boxes of different kinds of chips for their trip. Each box had 10 bags of chips. These clues show what they had left at the end of the trip. They ate all the rest.

  • They had 2 full boxes of potato chips and 3 bags left over.
  • They had 1 fewer box of nacho chips than potato chips, without any bags left over.
  • There were twice as many loose bags of barbecue chips than loose bags of potato chips, with no full boxes left over.

Week 31

Annabel, Benji, and Kayte trade stickers with each other.

  • Annabel has 4 strips of shape stickers. Each strip has 5 stickers.
  • Benji has 3 strips of horse stickers. Each strip has 4 stickers.
  • Kayte has 5 strips of sports stickers. Each strip has 3 stickers.

The children traded some stickers.

  • Benji gave Annabel 1 sticker from each of his horse strips.
  • Kayte gave Annabel 1 sticker from each of her sports strips.
  • Annabel gave Kayte 2 stickers from each of her shape strips.
  • After Annabel gave Benji some of her stickers, she had 2 left on each of her strips.

Week 32

Over the summer, Liam cared for his neighbors’ pets while the neighbors were away. He got paid for each visit to each house. Liam made 36 trips in all. He had to keep track of the number of times he went to each house.

  • Liam fed and played with the cat, Sneaker, twice a day for four days while the family was away.
  • He walked the dog, Filly, twice a day but for one day less than he took care of Sneaker.
  • Chomper, the puppy, needed a lot of attention. So Liam went to that house three times a day. That family was away two more days than Sneaker’s family.
  • Liam visited the hamster less often than he visited any other pet.

One groovy grandma is having one big birthday party for all seven grandchildren because each celebrates a birthday in the same month. She arranged candles in combinations that show each grandchild’s age. Each candle figure represents a certain number of years.

  • Marley and Keith are one year apart.

  • The 15 players on the first team rode three to a car.
  • The second and third team had three fewer players on each team than the first had.
  • In an odd number of cars, the second had one more player in each car than the third.
  • The fourth team had six players per car.

Week 35

Kira, Josiah, Mark and Taylor each ate a different kind of mini-pizza for lunch. After lunch, there was 1/4 of the plain pizza left, 1/3 of the pepper pizza left, 1/2 of the mushroom pizza left, and 5/8 of the sausage pizza left.
