God says that He visits the iniquity of the fathers to the 3rd and 4th generation of those who hate Him. God also says that a child won’t be punished for a father’s sin. That’s not what this verse is talking about.
God is just. He won’t unjustly punish someone. But a father’s sin can be passed down. How many family legacies are there out there of a child following in a parent’s sin footsteps?
It’s no excuse for any Christian because we are free from sin if we are in Christ. In Christ, we are a new creation.
It’s no excuse to be born a certain way. It’s no excuse to have something in our DNA. We are free from the power of sin and a new creation in Christ Jesus. We are removed from the kingdom of darkness and given a new identity as a child of the kingdom of Light.
It’s no excuse to say I couldn’t help myself. You have an ever-present help in times of trouble. You have the promise of a way of escape from any temptation. Saying you had to do something or acting like you couldn’t stop yourself is the same as saying God’s word isn’t true. You aren’t acting like a believer, which means that in your heart of hearts, you aren’t.
We are adopted into God’s family. We become like our new father.
This chapter of Exodus also says that God shows His unfailing love to thousands or to the thousandth generation of those who love Him and keep His commandments.
Sin is equated with hating God. Obeying God is equated with loving Him. It is deception to say you love God when knowingly choosing to sin against Him.
You need to make the choice: whom will you serve? Then you need to act on it, show that it’s true, show that’s what you want.
Repent and take the first step. God will meet you there, ready to show that steadfast unfailing love and the abundance of grace to meet us in our every need.
