“For I the LORD do not change; therefore you, O children of Jacob, are not consumed” (Malachi 3:6, ESV).
God is unchanging. The fancy theological word for that is immutability. He is unmoved. He will not morph into something else. He doesn’t grow and change and get new ideas. He’s not a man. He is Yahweh, the self-existing One. His name means I am. He is who He is and He will never be anything else. If He changed, He would no longer be God; He wouldn’t be Himself anymore.
His immutability, His “unchangeability,” is a good thing for us. Malachi 3:6 says that we are not consumed because of it. God preserves Israel because His heart for them will never change. He will always call them His children. They will always be chosen. They will always be His. There will always be a remnant.
As children of Israel, grafted in by our faith in Christ Jesus and our adoption into God’s family, we are the ones now in danger of being consumed. Except, we’re not. He’s unchanging. If you are truly knit together in Christ, He will not leave you, nor forsake you. You will not be consumed if you are one with Jesus. If you are one with Him, He keeps His own. His love is unfailing and unending. His mercies endure forever. His truth is everlasting. His compassions never fail. He is unchanging.
