…your gentleness made me great.

Psalm 18:35 ESV

At some point last year, when looking at the fruits of the Spirit and thinking about where I saw a lack, I had asked the Lord for gentleness. He worked it in me over this winter during one of those trials, where a false witness had risen up against me. I had tried defending myself. I had tried asking someone else to defend me. It made it worse. The Lord led me to the right response, a gentle spirit. I just had to wait quietly. It was the Lord’s work to defend me, to save me.

I told you that I had been studying the word meekness this year. I remembered later it was actually “gentleness” that started off the study. It grew to meekness and humility. The Hebrew word for gentleness is also translated as meekness and humility. They do all go together.

So how does gentleness make us great? Jesus’ humbled Himself to come to us and give His life for us and to us, and as we exhibit His humility and empty ourselves, we take on His life, the only good and great we’ll ever have, but the goodest and greatest possible 🙂
