Hold Fast to God’s Commands

There are a couple important commands in this short scripture portion for today. Hold fast and do not add to or take away from God’s commands.

We need to hold fast to God’s Word. We need to hold fast to God. We need to hold fast to truth. We need to hold fast to what God has shown us, what He’s taught us.

Deuteronomy 4:2a (BLB) “You shall not add to the word which I command you, nor take from it.”

That reminds me of Matthew 5:18 (NASB). “For truly I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not the smallest letter or stroke of a letter shall pass from the Law, until all is accomplished!”

There are people who say the Law is done away with. I’m not sure what they are thinking.

One, Jesus basically said that not even a dot over an “i” will be erased until all is accomplished and heaven and earth are removed to make way for the new heaven and earth in eternity.

Two, do they really think that now it’s okay to murder and steal and commit adultery (and there are plenty of laws outside of the Ten Commandments like them)? Do they believe Jesus died so that we could murder freely, knowing we can just ask for forgiveness later?

I hope that sounds ridiculous to you!

Jesus said He came to fulfill the Law. And we have His Spirit in us. The Law is fulfilled in us. The Bible says we’re slaves of righteousness. If you are living in the Spirit, you should feel like you have to do the right thing.

We don’t throw out God’s Word when it’s inconvenient or we don’t understand or we can’t see how it could possibly apply to us.

God’s bigger than time and place. He can make His Word apply to each of us in our own place and time, from the first disciples to those of us living thousands of years later.

So, hold fast. Never discard part of God’s Word. It’s for your wisdom and understanding. He put it there for you as a gift. Receive it. And if you don’t know what to do with it, ask for His help unwrapping it!
