God Is All-Powerful and Great

Omnipotent is the word that means all-powerful. God spoke and the world was formed and stayed in its place. He spoke and the sea divided. He spoke and the world was shaken. He speaks and there is life. He speaks and there is destruction. The Lord can take down armies. God just has to say the word. God has the power to reverse any disease or disability, even death itself. God has power over storms. He destroys armies in His power and exercises His power over Satan and hell.

God is great. Elohim gadol in the Hebrew. We’re told that those who love salvation proclaim that continually. The word “great” has more than one meaning. It means that God is really, really big. It also means He’s really awesome. Put those two together and you have Elohim gadol, the great God. He is above all, bigger than everything. He’s infinite and holds all potential and possibility.

Psalm 33:6-9 (NKJV) By the word of the Lord the heavens were made, and all the host of them by the breath of His mouth. He gathers the waters of the sea together as a heap; He lays up the deep in storehouses. Let all the earth fear the Lord; let all the inhabitants of the world stand in awe of Him. For He spoke, and it was done; He commanded, and it stood fast.

Hebrews 12:26 At that time his voice shook the earth, but now he has promised, “Yet once more I will shake not only the earth but also the heavens.”

1 Samuel 2:6 The LORD kills and brings to life; he brings down to Sheol and raises up.

2 Chronicles 14:9,12 Zerah the Ethiopian came out against them with an army of a million men … So the Lord defeated the Ethiopians…

Matthew 4:23 (NKJV) And Jesus went about all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing all kinds of sickness and all kinds of disease among the people.

Matthew 15:30 And great crowds came to him, bringing with them the lame, the blind, the crippled, the mute, and many others, and they put them at his feet, and he healed them.

Luke 7:15 And the dead man sat up and began to speak! Then Jesus gave him back to his mother.

Luke 8:24 And they went and woke him, saying, “Master, Master, we are perishing!” And he awoke and rebuked the wind and the raging waves, and they ceased, and there was a calm.

Revelation 20:9 And they marched up over the broad plain of the earth and surrounded the camp of the saints and the beloved city, but fire came down from heaven and consumed them.

Revelation 20:14 Then Death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire. This is the second death, the lake of fire.

Psalm 70:4 May all who seek you rejoice and be glad in you! May those who love your salvation say evermore, “God is great!”

Psalm 113:4 The LORD is high above all nations, and his glory above the heavens!

Psalm 139:8 If I ascend to heaven, you are there! If I make my bed in Sheol, you are there!

Lesson Point: God is great! He is big and powerful.

Challenge Question: Do you ever act in such a way that denies God’s power? For instance, in the storm, the disciples were afraid. They weren’t thinking, “No problem. We have the all-powerful God here with us.”
