Jeremiah chapter 51 ends the words of prophecy that the Lord gave Jeremiah. There is one last chapter that will give some of the final history of Jerusalem when it falls and what happens then.
We have a contrast between God and the gods of the people.
We have the Lord Almighty who “made the earth by his power, who established the world by his wisdom, and by his understanding stretched out the heavens.”
And we have the gods of the people. “They are worthless, a work of delusion.”
We could throw in there a contrast with man as well. “Every man is stupid and without knowledge.”
If that is who we are, we better listen to the only wise God, who can speak a word and create a world.
The whole earth was praising Babylon. They were looking in the wrong direction. How many people are taught their nation is the best, and we praise our countries. It’s looking in the wrong direction.
Our praise, our glory, our protection, our provision, none of it comes from our nation. The warning is “Go out of the midst of her, my people! Let everyone save his life!”
I am always saying that God is our Savior and that we’re not to save ourselves, but this verse says everyone should save themselves. What does that mean for us?
We have to make the choice to come out. We have to make the choice of God over the world. We have to make the choice to reject and hate the things of this world.
God wants us to choose Him. The other day my husband and I were talking about God delighting in His people. I said He would delight in us if we would just choose Him. He wants us to choose Him.
Every time we choose an entertainment, we’re choosing the world over Him. Every time we seek something else, we’re choosing the world over Him.
Make Him first. Make Him only. Flee from the world into His loving arms.
