Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long in the land that the Lord your God is giving you.

Exodus 20:12 ESV

This is the first command with a promise. What’s the promise? To live long in the land of promise. What’s the land of promise for the believer? We could say the kingdom of God, or everlasting life. If eternal life is forever, how could one live longer in the land of promise? Only by entering sooner.

God honors those who honor Him. You honor God by honoring your parents. It will definitely please him.

What does it mean to honor your parents? It’s more than obeying, though that’s a big part too. It’s how you treat them. It’s how you speak of them.

Modern-day psychology has taught us to blame our parents for our problems. That is all a lie from the devil. You are responsible for your own choices.

Parents, you are still required to honor your parents. Be careful how you speak about them around your children. You are teaching them how to treat you!
