…You shall be holy, for I the Lord your God am holy.

Leviticus 19:2 ESV

This command to be holy is followed by a bunch of laws, ways to treat God as holy and for us to be holy. Jesus gives a similar command in the Sermon on the Mount, surrounded by lists of commands to do in order to live holy lives and to treat God as holy.

Jesus fulfilled the law because He was the fulfillment of the law. The law is summed up love God, love others. God is love. Jesus was the embodiment of Love. We fulfill the law when we are filled with the fullness of God, when that perfect love is poured into us by the Spirit and flows out of us as living waters pouring God’s love back out toward God and others.

Although fulfilling the law of love is a completely selfless thing, we can’t do anything without receiving the benefit. When we are holy, we are set apart to Him. There’s a line in the sand and we’re on His side. The love we pour out is first shown us, and that devoted Love will never leave us.
