Proverbs 22:4 The reward for humility and fear of the Lord is riches and honor and life.
This made me think of Psalm 91. Honor and life are promised to the one who sets his love on God.
Because he holds fast to me in love, …I will rescue him and honor him. With long life I will satisfy him and show him my salvation (Ps. 91:14, 16).
Humility, fear of the Lord, loving devotion to God are all ways to honor and life. What do they have in common?
The fear of the Lord produces humility. Seeing God’s bigness, majesty, splendor, and power that makes us proclaim God’s greatness continually (Psalm 40:16) should make us see our small nothingness next to God. His eternalness should show us our life next to His is just a vapor. His holiness should show us our commonness.
And that humility shows us the amazingness of grace and mercy that allows one such as us to be called children of God, to approach His throne, to receive anything at all from His hand let alone every spiritual blessing offered us (Eph. 1:3), and the “all things” He freely gives us (Rom. 8:32).
And when we see how one so lowly as ourselves is received, how can we not offer Him our full love and devotion?
