Anglo-Saxons gathered in town halls to eat, drink, and be entertained by songs and stories. A famous story is called Beowulf, about a heroic prince. While this and other stories have been told, music was played on an instrument such as the lyre.

The entertainment was provided by their leaders. Their followers fought for them in battle. They were rewarded with gifts and feasts.
Sports and games were enjoyed such as wrestling, weight-lifting, ball games, hockey, races such as swimming races and horse races. Drinking ale and gambling were also popular. Not a good combination!
