Anglo-Saxon Fun

Anglo-Saxons gathered in town halls to eat, drink, and be entertained by songs and stories. A famous story is called Beowulf, about a heroic prince. While this and other stories have been told, music was played on an instrument such as the lyre.

I appear on the ground like a blanket,

and melt in the midday sun.

Sports and games were enjoyed such as wrestling, weight-lifting, ball games, hockey, races such as swimming races and horse races. Drinking ale and gambling were also popular. Not a good combination!
