A Great and Awesome God

In this portion of Deuteronomy 7, God is telling His people to not be afraid. He says, “You shall not be in dread of them, for the Lord your God is in your midst, a great and awesome God.” (Deut. 7:21)

What do you dread? What are you afraid of? Think through the list. Be honest. And then stop it. Do not be afraid. Why? Because God is with you. He is on your side. And He is a great and awesome God!

The Lord is my helper. I will not be afraid. That’s Scripture. It’s from Psalm 118:6. Hebrews puts it this way. “So we say with confidence, ‘The Lord is my helper; I will not be afraid. What can mere mortals do to me?’” (Hebrews 13:6)

Is the Scripture true? If you can’t say that with confidence, you are missing something about who God is. You aren’t believing in the Great and Awesome God! If you believed in Him, you wouldn’t be afraid. It’s as simple as that. Is the Bible true? If the Bible is true, then we can say with confidence that the Lord is our helper and we will not be afraid.

Right there. That’s what had me so upset over 2020 and 2021. The reaction of Christians showing they didn’t at all believe in a great and awesome God.

They believed in a god that couldn’t protect them, so they had to protect themselves. They believed in a god who wasn’t in control, so they had to take control themselves. They believed in a god who wasn’t powerful enough to stop a disease from coming near them, so they had to put up a wall of defense. They believed in a god that wasn’t loving enough to care for them, so they had to take care of themselves.

The one true God protects. The one true God saves. The one true God loves. The one true God is all powerful. The one true God is in control. I kept my doors and my arms open. No disease came near. And if it had, well, then my all-knowing, all-powerful, sovereign, in-control God allowed it and had a plan for it for my good and His glory, so hallelujah!

What do you believe about God? I saw many Christians show that they didn’t believe in the God of the Bible at all.

They showed by their actions and words that they believed in some weak, unloving God, with no authority to do anything. Why would you worship a god like that?

Do you know what you believe? Do you know who you believe in? Do you want to live without fear? It may not be easy, but it’s simple. Just believe in the great and awesome God.
