1 John 5:18

“We know that God’s children do not make a practice of sinning, for God’s Son holds them securely, and the evil one cannot touch them” (1 John 5:18, NLT).

Why is sinning not the habit of the Christian? What does the verse say? It’s because Jesus, Himself, holds us securely and our enemy can’t touch us. If we have been born into God’s kingdom, we have been set free from Satan’s kingdom. We are no longer slaves to sin but are now slaves to righteousness.

When we are in God’s kingdom, Jesus is our King, our Lord. He’s a good king. He shares all the wealth of His kingdom with us. We are blessed with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places. He pours out the very love of God into our hearts and He, Himself, is our Light.

When we abide in Christ, living by faith as one with Him, then we are walking in the Light. We talk with Him. We live our lives together. We are one. Being with Him, acknowledging Him in everything that is happening to us and around us. He shines His light on it all. He shows us what to pray about. He shows us our wrong thinking and actions, and we get rid of them. We want them away because we love Jesus. We want to remain close to Him. We want to stay in the Light, abiding. To choose not to get rid of the harmful ways in us, would be wanting to hide from the Light, and we’d be walking in darkness, and have no fellowship with Him.

We confess. We repent. He cleanses. He keeps. He keeps us. That’s a way of saying, “God’s Son holds them securely.” To keep, means to guard. He’ll guard us from evil. There’s no fear of falling away if we are in Christ and have given ourselves over to His keeping.
