An Anglo-Saxon army was just made up of a few hundred men. Each local area provided a certain number of men from their area. If England were invaded, the king could call for soldiers from each area.
They fought with spears, swords, bows and arrows, and a special ax just for battle. Their armor included helmets and shields made out of wood. They fought on foot, not on horseback or in chariots.
Vikings attacked the Romans starting in the 700s AD. Eventually, bands of soldiers were throughout England. King Alfred made peace with them, but sometimes bands would still invade.
