How to Write a Book Review

A book review is your response to a book you have read. You share about the book and your opinion about the book.

You can start your review with the title, author, and what kind of book it was and a general statement of what you thought of the book.

Then you can write a simple summary of the book. Don’t give away the ending! You are going to introduce the main character and setting of the story as well as the main plot of the story. Just share a couple of sentences, don’t tell the whole story.

Tell what you thought was great about the book. Is it funny? Exciting? The descriptions made you really picture what was going on? What was your favorite part?

Tell what you didn’t like about the book if there was anything. What do you wish happened?

Would you recommend the book to someone else? Who do you think would like this book?

As with anything you write, read it out loud and make sure it is easy to read and understand. Do you need transition words between the sections of your review? Read it to someone else and see if they have questions that you need to answer in your review.
