Benjamin Bradley

Steam engines weren’t just to power trains. They also powered boats. Benjamin Bradley built steam engines that could run boats, while still a slave. In 1856 he created the first US steam engine big enough to power a war ship. With the money he earned, he was able to buy his freedom.
