Lee’s Life Update

I have always been vague about where we lived overseas and what our family did. I still don’t want to put too much online, but I do want to share what’s going on with my family right now as things are kind of topsy-turvy for us.

Until this summer my family had been living in southeast Turkey near the Syrian border. I’ve actually seen ISIS members. They recruited in our neighborhood. Our city faced the brunt of the influx of refugees from Syria to the point where now a quarter of the city is refugees. We ended up being support to a school for Syrian refugees and my husband discipled Syrian, Afghan, and Iranian pastors leading fellowships in the city.

This spring we found out that our residence permits were not going to be renewed to continue living anywhere in that region of Turkey. As we had felt called specifically to that city and not to Turkey in general, we didn’t feel right just choosing another city in Turkey to live in. We sought the Lord as a family and two weeks later found ourselves moving to eastern Germany, really east, like a stone’s throw from Poland, or as they say here, a cat’s leap.

We moved in with a family who had been strangers before we arrived. We were at their home for six weeks until we moved into our apartment just this August. Yes, we just moved in. When we went to apply for our residence permit in Germany, we were met with a letter saying our application would be denied unless we enrolled our children in school. They had been told by a German friend of ours that we would be homeschooling. (He had been trying to be helpful.) The Lord has not changed our minds on homeschooling, and so we began speaking with this official and that official and sending letters, etc. In the end we were not given permission to homeschool, and we have to leave. We’ve only been in our apartment for less than a month. This weekend my husband will leave with my two oldest to find our next home, and I will be traveling by plane a week later with the youngest four children.

Where are we going? We are headed to Macedonia. It’s the first foreign country the Lord brought us to years ago. We were there for 6 years, living and working among the Roma, better known as Gypsies. I love Macedonia, and I have not been for a visit since 2008. We are allowed to stay three months there without a visa before we either need to get permission to live there or get out.

We do plan on coming back to Germany in three months (we can re-enter after being out 90 days) and will keep doing the work we’ve begun here and we’ll see what comes of it. We have friends here who will continue to seek an exemption for us to homeschool. We don’t know what God’s plan is for all of this.

Please be praying for me and my family through all the transition. I love being home, so it’s hard for me to not have a place to settle into.

    • Easy Peasy All-in-One Homeschool August 24, 2015 / 1:38 pm

They can be hostile to any foreigners as well. But we have met wonderful Christians and there’s even a German woman translating EP’s Learn to Read book. She’s homeschooling until the compulsory age. There are others who live just over the border in order to homeschool. Who knows, maybe we can help them with materials somehow too?

Lee, we are so thankful for your curriculum. It was an answer to many prayers. We are missionaries in NE Brazil and do not have access to books, etc unless a kind person comes to visit from US. It took us 6 months and 7 moves to settle in a home for more than a few months. We also have 6 children and I feel your concerns and hardships most deeply. May God continue to strengthen you and bless you richly for the obedient sacrifices you and your family makes. We are lifting you up.

  15. tracydelahuerta August 24, 2015 / 1:49 pm

Thank you for sharing your life with us. We will be praying for you all.
I just started homeschooling my 13 year old two weeks ago with this curriculum and I absolutely love it.
I pray or Abba Father ,our great and mighty God make a way where there is no way. I pray He would continue to guide your footsteps and blessed you all mightily. That He would open doors no man can open and close those no man can shut. That He will be the soft voice encouraging and guiding you. I pray that He will be your protection. I thank you Gather that you complete the good works you started. I thank you and praise you in advance. In Jesus name Amen

    Lee,
I just want to let you I’m going to keep you in my prayers so you and your family could adapt to all the changes and you are facing right now. Also, that you give grace to each other while adapting to all these sort of new places, culture and people. I know a little bit how you feel. We lived in a garage room the five of us for four months in the another missionaries’ home, with our belongings in a storage room and some clothes in our suitcases. Adapting to being uncomforted, new routines, culture and place was not easy at all.

  28. Dulice August 24, 2015 / 2:50 pm

Oh Lee! I am so sorry to read this. I unfortunately can relate to a life in total flux as we have been at it in the US for over 3 years now. I am desperately looking forward to planting our roots and setteling down so that not only can I begin to thrive again but for now we have to trust in our Fathers plan for us. I will have you and your sweet family in our prayers! You are a blessing in our lives! ❤

I, like many others, feel unbelievably blessed by your curriculum and am so grateful for all you have done for others. I don’t know you at all and already know you have a heart after the Lord’s own. You sharing this tiny bit of your story has inspired me so much today! I needed this! I came online to get organized and print out everything I needed for the next couple of weeks (a task I was dreading as I’m a bit ADD and struggle with the admin part of schooling). My family also has been dealing with 5 years of a very chaotic life on many levels, although on a totally different front. The past couple of months I have been seeking the Lord as much as I ever have, being disciplined and intentional in my time with Him and my emotional/mental state seems to only be getting more chaotic, even though things around seem pretty calm for the first time in a long while giving the circumstances. In a weird way the peek into your own “chaos” spoke to me (along with the chapter of Ransom for Many I just finished which spoke of Jesus’ divine ability to calm any and EVERY chaos in our lives). It was just a bit of confirmation in what He’s speaking to me. “With God all things are possible” and He has already overcome this world!! We will be praying (and I mean that!) for peace in your chaos and for you all to see His face through everything! Thank you so much for all you have given to others. Whether intentionally or not.

  39. Tiffany August 24, 2015 / 4:34 pm

We stumbled upon your site the week we started school. (This is our 2nd year of homeschooling.) I scratched my original plan, and we are now using your site as our backbone!! we LOVE this site and all you offer!! I can’t believe that you can still do this with all the struggles you are facing! You have been such a blessing in my life, alleviating so much stress & helping me to plan our curriculum! Thank you so much for all of your time & hard work!! Your family will be in our prayers!!

Prayers for your family! I commit to pray fervently for your situation. And thank you for the amazing gift you give to families via your free curriculum. My son was so defeated in public school and diagnosed autistic. We started homeschooling last year using EP which was all we could afford and he is a different person. He began 7th grade today with excitement instead of agony for the first time. People recently commented about him having a new personality and seeming less stressed and having the gleam back in his eyes. Thank you for the opportunity you have provided that we were able to homeschool when it otherwise may not have been possible. You are truly a blessing to our family!

  42. Robyn Allison August 24, 2015 / 4:43 pm

We will pray for you and your family to continue to stay safe in your travels and that God will reveal His plan to you

My son is ADHD and he has mainraibed good grades this way! Thank you so much for making a way for others! I do believe He will water you as you and your hysband have watered the lives of others!

  84. Amber Reece August 25, 2015 / 11:49 pm

Hi my name is LoisReece I am Amber’s mom and I will be praying for you and for God’s will to be done for you and your lives, I know the Lord has a plan for you you have not seen it yet. If you feel you need to move where you have been before that is the Lord’s plan for you, to be safe. As the angel came to Joseph in a dream when Mary had Jesus to leave the place that they lived and go to another place they went by night and they were safe.

  85. Tanya August 26, 2015 / 8:16 am

Wow! Challenging times. But God is faithful. So glad that he sorts out the steps as we follow his leading. We have just begun using this curriculum as we prepare our children to return to the US after living in Israel for 4 years. I was a second grade teacher at an international school in Jerusalem, of all things, and our children were in an Israeli school in which they speak Hebrew. We knew that the wise choice was to homeschool them, particularly through this transitional time back to the US. Living and ministering here has been precious. I was so encouraged to see that you live, work and minister overseas as well.

My children are really enjoying this curriculum, and I wanted to let you know. Our mornings are busy and productive as they learn. One of the greatest features is that they are forced to pay close attention and read the instructions thoroughly. Developing this skill is paramount. They have done a bit of extra work a few times because they didn’t pay close attention. I find that this experience is one of the greatest teachers. 🙂 Do that a few times and you will be sure to be thorough!

I’m excited to follow your journey and see where the Lord takes you. I have a German friends who homeschools her children in the US (her husband’s job relocated him to the US). She told me how difficult it is to homeschool in Germany. I pray for God’s will to be done in your lives and that he will make it clear.

    Blessings,
    Tanya

  86. Destiny Ingram August 26, 2015 / 9:10 am

Praying for you dear sister! We are in Southern Germany, but our SOFA allows us the homeschool. However, the missionary families we have here have had the same dilemma. I hope God reveals his purpose for you all in this soon! Thank you for sharing this resource with the world and for loving the Lord!

  87. Ginger Bennett August 26, 2015 / 5:01 pm

Wow! What a transition….I cannot begin to imagine! Praying for you to land softly wherever God takes you

  88. annamarieasha August 26, 2015 / 5:47 pm

My family’s prayers are certainly with yours. I am so grateful to you for this curriculum that you have become a regular household name around here. I sure hope that things work out for you and your family and that you stay safe!

  89. jill August 26, 2015 / 6:38 pm

I will be praying for you an your family! Being a military family, I have an idea about the moving around and new cultures, new rules and laws, not having a home home and living out of suitcases for months! It can be rough! I will be praying for God’s will to come to pass without a ton of friction!! I will also be praying that you will feel settled with a peaceful sense of home while you wait.

  90. Natalie August 27, 2015 / 10:42 am

  96. Waynel August 29, 2015 / 11:02 pm

Dear Lee, we as a family have put your family on our prayer list and will be praying daily for you folks. Interesting that you are in Macedonia – haven’t we all had such a love for them especially after Paul saw his vision. Bless your hearts as you seek to please the Lord.

We have friends in Cappadocia. U might know them. They have nine kids. The eldest came to the U.S. for college lately. And our pastor is in Bangladesh this week discipling pastors there.

We are about to begin our year with Easy Peasy and are so thankful for it. We did a little last year starting in the middle of the year. We are grandparents raising four of my daughters kids: 13 and a little special, 11, 4 and 3.

Blessings over your heads Rich and Waynel Walker

I am sitting here, about to look over your curriculum, and then I saw this post. Now my heart and eyes are all mixed up in a puddle. May the Father fill you with the deepest joy and surround you with peace that is so profound it goes beyond reason. In the midst of so much chaos, may you see beauty, may you know the reality of His presence, and may you have a little fun along the way. (We were gifted with fun and laughter during my dad’s cancer journey, so I know this is possible, even though it sounds crazy. Ha!) Lifting you UP!!! -From a sister-in-Ch**s* in South Carolina

  98. Mary August 31, 2015 / 2:11 am

Wow, God bless you in all your journeys. I am so glad that you are out of Turkey! I know that the very safest place is in the center of God’s will. But, reall, ISIS is terrifying. Thank you for all of your hard work. I’m so thankful for this website. My husband has recently been called to preach. I have no idea what God is going to do or where He will send us, but I have a lot of peace that at least I won’t have to worry about packing up loads of curriculum! 😀

  99. Kim August 31, 2015 / 10:21 am

Now to Him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to His power that is at work within us, to Him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, for ever and ever! Amen

Hello there, I was just handed your website address by one of my Christian sisters to help keep my 5 year old busy while I work with our 7 year old who needs one on one. I’ve just read your recent message about what you all are going through, and you know this is how God works! My “peasly” problem with my 5 year old is nothing compared to what your family is going through, and yet you are providing my solution!

Thank you for doing this, and we are going to pray as a family and a church for your families situation. God has a plan, and he is in control. I praise him for your faithfulness!!

Our family is praying for you! We did not have a home for all last year. It was hard enough being without a home when we had family to live with, I can’t even imagine the added uncertainty that you find yourselves in. With everything in an upheaval Easy Peasy was such a blessing to us. I am praying for peace and guidance for your family! Thank you for your service.

  116. Angie September 8, 2015 / 2:13 pm

  121. mdyer321 September 12, 2015 / 2:00 pm

We are praying for you, I feel for what your going through… really as if it were us. Stay strong and the Lord will prevail, he always done. You all are a huge blessing and it’s amazing you get to travel at the same time but I’m sure it has its days. Keep your heart on the Lord and the things of the world will grow dim. God is fighting the good fight for you, God bless you all and you have our support through prayer and petition! Amen 🙂

  122. Sue September 14, 2015 / 9:33 am

Lee…….thank you for being so ‘selfless’.For giving everything to the Lord and in turn blessing all of us. Keep strong . I have a word of encouragement for you. Isaiah 43:1-4…….possibly till 8. Please pray and ask the Lord to confirm. Just in case you haven’t a bible to hand here’s part of it:- 2 When you pass through the waters,
    I will be with you;
And through the rivers, they will not overflow you.

When you walk through the fire, you will not be scorched.
Nor will the flame burn you.
For I am the Lord your God,
The Holy One of Israel, your Saviour:
I have given Egypt as your ransom,
Cush and Seba in your place.

Since you are precious in My sight,
since you are honoured and I love you.

please be encouraged. I was thinking about you and the above scripture came to mind. It’s scripture the Lord gave me when my heart was heavy. He confirmed it to me again and again because at the time I wasn’t in the right place to except it. He actually arranged for us all to go to a Christian camp and there the Pastor said that the Lord had given him the above word along time ago and had reminded him of it that day. They actually sang the words…..it was then that I accepted the words from the Lord……… I’m sure He has everything organised for you, although you might not be able to see it yet……stay strong and remember that He is always Faithful…….We will pray for the Lords protection over you.

    Many blessing

  123. CarisM September 14, 2015 / 4:11 pm

Lee, Thank you for sharing. Sometimes I struggle with my everyday things. I found your sight quite early in your development but, my daughter wasn’t even old enough for school yet. I wanted to homeschool my now 20 yo and was unable do to circumstances. I get another chance with my now 5 yo. I kept your resource on the desktop of my computer for when I knew she would be ready. I have recommended your resource so many times to struggling parents that do not have much money. Last year I finally talked my sister (in FL) to get on your site and just look it over.her son is now going into 5th grade. She is now using EP! it really fits her lifestyle as a part-time post(wo)man. My 5yo daughter really likes the simplicity of it. She is just about done with GR2 and really wants to get into the 1st level “red book” as he calls it. We have been SO blessed by all that you have passed on to us and to all those that help you support the program and update the different links. My husband really likes the flexibility of this program too! Thank you and you are in our thoughts every night when we pray for our extended family.

  124. towerofshelly September 14, 2015 / 7:48 pm

  131. Suzanne Cook October 7, 2015 / 2:06 am

Germany, unfortunately, has a terrible record with homeschoolers. I know a family who left Germany as refugees because of fines, threat of imprisonment and threat of removing children from the home if they continues to homeschool. Thankfully, they were granted asylum here in the US after a long battle in the courts represented by HSLDA. I would be very cautious taking my children there. I will pray God gives continues wisdom and keeps you safe.

  132. Audrey October 8, 2015 / 1:52 pm

Thank you for sharing your faith and work that you and your family are accomplishing for the Lord.
